Hello and sorry for the long absence! It's been a little crazy here at Douglas County 4-H.

But in the midst of it all, we have completed several contests including Cake Decorating, Speech and Demonstration, Performing Arts, and Creative Cooks. Placings have been uploaded to the Douglas County Extension web site.

Community Service Makes 4-H Great

One of the greatest parts of being a 4-H member is the community service in which 4-Hers become involved. In a recent study, 64.3% of Colorado 4-H members were involved in a project to help others as compared to 47% of non-4-H youth. These projects help 4-Hers to feel more connected to their communities.

In Douglas County there are many community service projects through clubs and the county council. One was recently highlighted in Your Hub of the Denver Post. Another will be completed before Easter.

The D.C. Dallys 4-H Club has been making much needed lap robes for veteran patients at the VA Medical Center in Denver for the past two years. The lap robes are an annual project of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The skills of the Dallys was much appreciated and the club's members were honored on February 20th by the Smoky Hill Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Chairman of Youth Services to Veteran Patients, Marilyn Kardell, made the presentation.

The Rising Stars 4-H Club had a difficult time choosing from so many needs within the community, but finally decided to make thirty Easter/spring baskets for the Ronald McDonald House in Denver as just one of their projects. Their leader says not only did they feel good about their contribution, but they learned valuable life skills in planning the service project.

Congratulations, Dallys and Rising Stars, for a job well-done. More congratulations to every Douglas County 4-H Club for their many and varied ways of serving the community.

Discounted tickets for 4-H members for Colorado Mammoth

February 27 is the Wild West themed night. They will have Mutton Bustin’ during halftime along with other Wild West themed activities throughout the evening.

Teen writing contest in Castle Rock, CO

I know there are a few writers among us. See details below on an upcoming contest!

"Castle Rock teens ages 12-18 are invited to submit an original piece of writing inspired by the town of Castle Rock.

The My Castle Rock Teen Writing Contest, sponsored by Philip S. Miller Library at 100 S. Wilcox St. gives teens an opportunity to express themselves and tell the community what Castle Rock means to them. Registration for the contest runs through March, and submissions will be accepted through April 1.

Poems and essays will be judged by a library panel and via a public online voting process. Voting will be open April 3 through April 17. Contest winners will be announced April 26."

Douglas County 4-H members, here's an exciting opportunity! It would be great if Douglas County were represented in the Colorado STEM initiative. See details below.

Be on the cutting edge and join the Colorado 4-H STEMtv Team! This team consists of 30 youth throughout the state who are interested in developing leadership skills through science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) knowledge.

Workshops, tours, and service learning opportunities empower youth who have an interest in STEM related projects. Team members can learn, teach, volunteer, and report STEM news from their respective counties and regions.

The Colorado 4-H STEMtv Team workshops are open to 4-H members (13-19 years of age) who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math. Team members must re-apply every year. CSU president speaking at Governor’s Forum on Colorado Agriculture

As we all know, 4-H is the Youth Development component of CSU Extension services. You may be interested to know that CSU is participating in the upcoming forum on agriculture in Colorado. See information below.

State and national leaders in the field of agriculture, including Gov. Bill Ritter, Commissioner of Agriculture John Stulp, Colorado State University President Tony Frank and CSU Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences Craig Beyrouty, will speak at the annual Governor’s Forum on Colorado Agriculture on Thursday, Feb. 18 at the Renaissance Denver Hotel, 3801 Quebec St.

Colorado State University President Frank will discuss the many ways that CSU connects with farmers and ranchers across the state. Colorado State is involved in a variety of interests from wheat research to livestock production including emerging markets, such as organics. Colorado State researchers are helping to answer questions surrounding food availability, food affordability and food safety.

CSU College of Agricultural Sciences Dean Beyrouty will detail some of the emerging and strategic research initiatives that are being developed hand-in-hand with the agricultural industry in the state.

Deadline for early registration is Feb. 8. The cost is $100 or $45 for students. After Feb. 8, registration is $120 or $50 for students. To register, visit www.colorado.gov/ag/forum or call (303) 239-4100.

Free Small Acreage Workshop March 6 in Elbert County

Thought some of you might be interested in this upcoming workshop.

You are invited to a free Small Acreage Workshop on Saturday, March 6 at Elbert Elementary School from 9-11:30 am.

Ben Berlinger from Natural Resources Conservation Service will offer an insightful look at animal grazing behavior. He will discuss how social behavior can influence food selection, what types of forage animals prefer, nutritional needs, toxins and aversions.

Next, learn from local expert Michelle Oldham of El Paso County Noxious Weeds about how to identify, control, and prevent weeds on your property.

Additionally, there will be various vendors and informational booths with representatives from local Conservation Districts and Division of Wildlife. Coffee and donuts will be served.

Community invited to Douglas County 4-H Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction

Please join Douglas County 4-H at the annual Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction event on February 5, 2010 in Kirk Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Dinner and the silent auction begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by a live auction.

This annual event is the main fundraising effort of the 4-H Exchange Group. Every two years, Douglas County trades trips with another state, giving members the opportunity to learn about diversity, history and culture.

In July 2008, Douglas County 4-H Exchange members hosted a group from Sussex County Delaware. Then in 2009, Douglas County 4-H traveled to Delaware to reconnect with new friends, tour Sussex County, and learn about a different state.

Not only do Douglas County 4-H members and staff prepare and serve spaghetti and Italian fixings, but many fine items are available for bidding at the silent auction. Items include original art work, gift baskets, gift cards, rounds of golf, a well-stocked kid’s table with items as low as 50 cents, and more.

To purchase tickets, call the Douglas County 4-H Office at 720-733-6940. Tickets remain at 2005 prices: $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children.

Here is an opportunity to take an online course about investing specifically for farm and ranch families. Take a look.

eXtension, in partnership with the FINRA Investor Education Foundation, has launched a new online investing course targeting farm and ranch families. The 8-lesson course helps farm families plan for a financially stable future that meets long-term needs. Enrollment is now open at http://www.extension.org/pages/Investing_for_Farm_Families.

The FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) Investor Education Foundation worked with a team of 16 members from 10 different states, USDA/CSREES (now USDA/NIFA) and eXtension.

12th Annual “Colorado…it’s AgriCultural” photography contest

You may be interested submitting photos to this upcoming contest, due December 31. Here are the details:

Entries must be submitted to the Colorado Department of Agriculture with an official entry form by December 31, 2009, and all photographs must relate to Colorado agriculture in some way. Prizes will be awarded in four subject areas: agritourism, crops, livestock and people. A $150 gift card will be awarded as the grand prize for the photograph that best portrays the spirit of Colorado agriculture.

Judging will be based on theme, creativity and technical quality. All winning photographs will be displayed in the Beede-Hamil Agriculture Building at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo.

4-H Bird Photo Contest

Information on an upcoming photo contest...

Do you photograph birds? If so, USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection (APHSI) invites you to enter your best poultry or pet bird photos in the: BIOSECURITY FOR BIRDS Calendar photo contest.

APHIS is interested in photos of all kinds of birds – including poultry, game birds, wild birds, shorebirds, and pet birds. Photos should show the bird(s) in a clean environment and without people in the photo. People of all ages are encouraged to enter their photos. Photos should accurately reflect the subject matter. The main image should not be digitally altered beyond removing dust, cropping, cleaning up the background, and/or making reasonable adjustments to exposure, color, contrast, etc.

All photos will be credited with the photographer’s name. Maximum of three (3) photos per person will be accepted. Deadline for submitting contest entries is Jan. 31, 2010. Winners will be notified via e-mail by Feb. 28, 2010. The winning photo(s) will be featured in the 2011 Biosecurity for Birds calendar and the Biosecurity for Birds website (http://healthybirds.aphis.usda.gov) and may be featured as screensavers.

2010 National 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Workshops

Here is an announcement straight from the state.

The National 4-H Shooting Sports Committee is pleased to announce that West Virginia and Colorado will be hosting 2010 National 4-H Shooting Sports Workshops.

Dates and Locations:

West Virginia – May 3-8, 2010 – Jackson’s Mill State 4-H Camp, Near Weston, WV
COLORADO – May 10-15, 2010 – Grand Junction, CO

These workshops are designed to prepare adult volunteers to teach other adult volunteers through state workshops. This is an excellent opportunity to expand or improve your state training team. Workshop participants share ideas and information about their state 4-H Shooting Sports programs while enhancing skills for teaching adults and volunteers in the use of the national curriculum.

In order for a participant to attend a National 4-H Shooting Sports Workshop, he/she must meet the following guidelines:

Have state level certification in the discipline in which they are enrolling.
Have a minimum level of experience in the discipline to be determined by each discipline instructor(s).
Have interest in 4-H and youth development.
Endorse the train-the trainer concept in basic shooting skills.
Must have previous experience teaching youth and/or adults in your respective state.
Have current 4-H Volunteer status or Extension Faculty status in their state.
Must be recommended by the respective State 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator.

Happy Thanksgiving Douglas County 4-H

Hello Douglas County 4-H families,

'Tis the season to be thankful and a Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

As I consider what it means to be thankful, my mind wanders to two classmates from high school. I am thankful to have connected with these people through social networking because while neither was a best friend in school, I love knowing how they are doing and what's been going on for the last 20+ years.

And then one day recently, the husband of one of these friends contracted H1N1. He rapidly declined and was hospitalized. His kidneys started failing and he had to go on dialysis. In a few short days, he went from a healthy normal life full of the usual things to a sudden and unexpected passing. His wife, my classmate, was devastated and lost - and still is - yet she continued to thank those around her. Her family and friends were there every step of the way.

My other friend, a year younger than me, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on September 18. He died November 23, this week of Thanksgiving. When his friends learned of his diagnosis, what happened? They rallied around him and organized a fundraiser on his behalf, a fun day of bowling, live band music, laughing, hugging, and support - as it turned out, 8 days before he passed away.

These are both devastating and shockingly sudden situations. And yet I witnessed profound thankfulness and gratitude during these hardships. Both classmates held strong to optimism even in their sorrow, drew their friends and family closer, took the time to tell these people thank you, and caused those around them to join together as one strong and gracious and connected group.

I can ask for no better reminders that focusing on gratitude, and indeed making it the very foundation of my life, will bring only the most positive and profound results for everyone around me.

So I say to you, be thankful. Be thankful for your parents, even if you're grounded - because they love you. Be thankful for your grandparents every day you have them - they may be with you only a short time. Be thankful for your kids, even when their boundless energy wears you out - because it's good to remember that we too had boundless energy! Be thankful for your coworkers - because variety really is the spice of life and the challenges they present make you grow. Be thankful for paperwork (this is a hard one for me!) - because that's what makes your paycheck happen, your insurance pay your medical costs, and your kids to be enrolled in 4-H.

“Colorado 4-H - Ready for Another 100 Years” Artwork Contest

Colorado 4-H members, we need your help! 2010 marks the 100th year of Colorado 4-H and we are looking for 4-H members to submit artwork that will be used to help promote 4-H throughout the year. The selected design will be professionally rendered as it will be used for 100th year celebration materials including brochures, promotion materials, etc.

Artwork Guidelines:
· Artwork must fit on standard size paper (8 ½ by 11)
· Artwork may have up to four colors
· Artwork must include the words “Colorado 4-H Ready for Another 100 Years”
· Electronic artwork (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Microsoft Publisher, etc.) is preferred, but hand drawn artwork will also be accepted.

The Chuck Urano Memorial Award, sponsored by the Colorado Farm Show, will be awarded to six deserving students who strive to leave a lasting impression on their community and the agriculture industry.

The Colorado Farm Show is proud to award six $2000.00 Scholarships, to help offset the increasing costs of attaining a Higher Education, to graduating High School Seniors declaring an Agricultural Major at a College or University of their choice.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
1. Applicants must be graduating High School Seniors.

2. The Chuck Urano Memorial Award application, accessible in pdf format at www.ColoradoFarmShow.com, must be filled out by the applicant.

3. Applicants must be citizens of the United States and reside in Colorado.

4. Students must be pursuing a degree in an Agricultural related field of study at the accredited College or University of their choice.

5. A sealed, signed copy of the applicants Official High School Transcripts must accompany the scholarship application. Senior year classes must be listed if not included on transcripts.

6. One letter of recommendation from a High School official/teacher must be included with the application packet.
7. A one page essay outlining the applicant’s educational goals, chosen career plans, and any other information that the applicant considers pertinent must be included with the application.

8. Application must be legible (typed preferred) to be considered.

9. Complete application packet must be received in the Colorado Farm Show Office (received not post marked) by January 11, 2010.

10. Failure to submit a completed application, with all of the required materials in one packet, will eliminate your application.

4-H Lessons Learned - Part II

Here’s the second installation in the series of “4-H According to Mary.” This one comes from the “leader” standpoint.

As a young mother with no children in 4-H, I was asked to help a beginning 4-Her with a clothing construction project. As much as I disliked sewing, I felt I probably needed to take on the challenge to feel a sense of satisfaction in the small community in which we lived.

I remember the project was a poncho made out of light weight denim and it had white fringe on it. I was very patient with the little girl and she seemed to enjoy the project. She took direction well and in the end she won Grand Champion. She was happy, I was happy, and her mother was ecstatic. In the end, however, I was exhausted from the experience.

When my eldest daughter became 4-H age, it seemed that clothing construction would be an excellent choice as a beginning project. Yea, right! (Remember that I disliked sewing.)

During that first year I tried to impress upon this child the importance of sewing very slow and steady on the machine. So repeatedly I was saying to her, “Let up on that foot feed !” She began to show less and less enthusiasm for sewing, but I kept on with my comments.

She did very well at judging and of course, I was all smiles. The next year, however, when I suggested that she take clothing construction again, there was a resounding, “NO!” When I sat down with her and tried to better understand this reverse enthusiasm, I was told a story.

My daughter said that she had a nightmare the year before. In it I was yelling, “Get your foot off that foot feed!” When she did, the sewing machine only went faster. I continued yelling, but she couldn’t stop the machine. When I saw her distress at recalling the nightmare, I knew it was time to find a new sewing teacher and we did.

To this day, however, my oldest daughter will not sew.

MORAL OF THE STORY FOR LEADERS: If you want to positively impact the life of a child, teach what you love.

4-H Tax Exempt Status for clubs

Douglas County 4-H clubs,

Here are some reminders from the state 4-H office regarding your tax exempt status.

New 4-H clubs must get an EIN.
All 4-H affiliated clubs and organizations must file an e-Postcard by the 15 day of the 5th month after the end of their club fiscal year. For Douglas County clubs on an Oct. 1 – Sept. 30 year, that would be by Feb. 15, 2010.
Failure to file (or attempt to file) could result in the loss of tax exempt status of the group.
For clubs that try to file and get an error message from the IRS that they are not included under the 4-H Group Exemption Number, take note:
a) Keep a copy of the message as proof that they tried to file but were unsuccessful. b) Do not call the IRS to try and figure it out. More problems are caused by well-meaning volunteers calling the IRS about filing problems than are solved by the call. National 4-H Headquarters asks that individuals do not call the IRS.
National 4-H Headquarter is still working with the IRS to resolve issues with our GEN.
County offices will still collect and keep track of club EIN’s.
At some point in the future, the state will be notified by National 4-H Headquarters about adding new clubs and deleting defunct clubs from our state certified list.

Information straight from the Colorado State 4-H office, here are some great opportunities in Washington DC.

National 4-H Council is looking for Program Assistants (PA) for the Wonders of Washington (WOW) and the Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) programs. This is a great chance for youth to experience professional and leadership development opportunities of a lifetime.

The WOW program, which takes place from February through May, gives youth the chance to explore, develop, and refine the skills necessary to become outstanding citizens and leaders in their communities. Using Washington, D.C., as their living classroom, WOW PAs help youth learn about the history of our nation and various leaders who have shaped it. PAs receive opportunities for professional development not only through interactions with school groups, but also through internship experiences with various departments of National 4-H Council.

The CWF program gives 4-Hers the opportunity to strengthen their communication, leadership, and other citizenship skills on a national level. Held during the summer, CWF PAs lead nearly 2,000 youth in exchanging ideas, practicing respect, and forming friendships with other youth from across the country. PAs guide hands-on activities, simulations and tours of many Washington monuments and memorials, as youth CWF participants find out what citizenship means to them and how to make a difference in their own communities. PAs have the unique ability to make a lasting impression on the lives of many youth, while spending summer just outside of the nation’s capital.

Guess what! A Douglas County resident won the statewide 4-H truck raffle!

Our very own Hannah Ochoa sold the winning 4-H truck raffle ticket to Vicci Starkowski of Franktown, CO. This is quite a big deal considering this truck raffle was a statewide fundraising event!

Thanks to the efforts of those who sold raffle tickets, 4-H Council will receive approximately $700 to be used for the benefit of Douglas County 4-H kids.

4-H Gala Honors One of Our Own

On October 3, 2009, 4-H supporters gathered at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for an evening of science fun and discovery as everyone experienced the electricity of 4-H. There were science experiments, wind contraptions, cockroach races, rocket launches, and a 4-H planetarium show. The master of ceremonies was Colorado Speaker of the House Terrance Carroll.

It was a special night for Douglas County also. One of our own 4-Hers was honored for her lightning photo which was prominently displayed with seven other lightning photos from around the state. Colette Worcester proudly answered questions about how she captured the lightning striking near Castle Rock. A very determined young woman, Colette said she took over 600 photographs to catch that one mesmerizing picture.

Colette's picture will be on display throughout the state in the next year. Congratulations, Colette!

Collegiate 4-H Shadow Program in Colorado

The collegiate 4-H Shadow Program, October 8-10, 2009, is for high school sophomores to seniors who are interested in seeing what college life is like in a safe setting. Participants will attend class with a collegiate 4-H member, visit with the admissions office, get a tour of CSU, and see all that CSU has to offer.

They will arrive Thursday, October 8 in the evening, participate in icebreakers and get to know you games, spend the night with one of the collegiate 4-H members, attend classes, tours and information sessions on Friday. On Friday evening we will attend the CSU homecoming bonfire and festivities, and then Saturday participants will have the choice of attending a CSU football game or just heading home.

The only cost for participants will be meals and any extra spending money as all other activities will be free. If interested please fill out the registration form along with a health form and code of conduct form.

4-H According to Mary

4-H is a program in which young people and adults alike learn a variety of life lessons. Over the years as a 4-Her, a 4-H leader, a 4-H parent, and a 4-H Agent, I have discovered a multitude of lessons. Some have been comical, some heart-wrenching, some heart-warming, but all have had a part in making me who I am.

Throughout the 2009-10 year in 4-H, I plan to share several of the stories that have a lesson (or moral, as you will). As members, leaders, and parents, you may not agree with my evaluations of each event, but they all help me put 4-H in perspective. So here goes with the first installation of “4-H According to Mary.”

With county fair just finished, the following story seems fitting. This one is from the “parent” standpoint.

It was 1993 and my eight year old daughter had prepared for her first county fair in Kansas. She had worked so hard in perfecting the skill of making a quick bread that everyone in the neighborhood had fresh baked lemon nut bread over the course of the summer. Of course she had saved the best looking loaf to enter in local county fair. Even though I was her mother, as a foods judge I can tell you that the bread looked nearly perfect – EXCEPT to the judge.

Now I don’t know from whence they uncovered this judge, but my bet is that she was a last minute fill-in who had never judged foods before – at least not quick breads! I heard the entire interview as I stood about six feet in back of my daughter. When the judge said, “Honey, this quick bread is wonderful, but it shouldn’t have this crack down the middle of the top crust,” I think I almost sucked all the air out of that building. (For those of you that don’t know the characteristics of a good quick bread, it should have a crack down the middle.)

When that kid, who had worked so hard and learned so much, came back to me with tears in her eyes and asked, “Mom, isn’t my bread supposed to look like that,” I said, “Yes.” It was difficult to explain to an eight year old that just because you do a good job, you don’t always get credit for your skills. But in this case, I explained, everything was not lost because she did learn a lot in the project and, ultimately, she knew more about quick breads than the adult judge!

Yes, that white ribbon was not a prized piece of memorabilia in the Baldwin household, but my child took more away from the experience than a tangible decoration that has long ago been discarded.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Ribbons lose their luster, but knowledge can never be lost.

Equipment will be provided for use by students; however, students are encouraged to bring their own equipment if they have it.

The beginner school starts Friday, September 25 and concludes Saturday afternoon, September 26. It will be held at the Morgan County Fairgrounds in Brush, Colorado.

The cost is $125 which includes educational materials. Registration deadline is September 11 and a minimum of eight (8) students is required for the school. A maximum number of 16 participants will be enforced as individual instruction is a priority.

Community service opportunity to help those in need

Douglas County 4-H community, here's an opportunity to help Castle Rock residents.

Volunteers and applicants are being recruited for the Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Department's fifth annual Paint-a-Thon to be held in September.

Volunteers help fire department members prepare and paint the homes of Castle Rock residents who are physically or financially unable to do so themselves. Up to three homes will be given a face-lift Saturday, September 26 and Saturday, October 3. Each day begins at 8:00 a.m. and continues until 5:00 p.m. or when finished.

Volunteers should sign up by Monday, September 14. Participants must be at least 16 years old or accompanied by an adult.

All materials needed are provided, and volunteers get snacks, water, and lunch. Additional information and application forms for both volunteers and homeowners are available for download on the Fire page at www.CRgov.com or by calling 303-660-1066.

I know we have lots of creative Douglas County 4-H members and leaders and parents in Douglas County (cuz you have to be 18 or older to participate), so I thought of you when I saw this press release. And if any you make a decadent chocolate dessert, don't forget your friendly 4-H Communications Specialist!

"Create your most decadent dessert with at least one Ghirardelli baking product (chocolate chips, bars and/or cocoa), and up to 10 other ingredients. This chocolate challenge--now a five year tradition at fairs--rewards winners with cash prizes, gift packages and winning ribbons.

The most mouth-watering desserts win! All types and kinds of recipes are welcome, as long as they are full of chocolate flavor. First and second place entries win $150 and $50 respectively. The top three winners take home a Ghirardelli gift basket, plus a prize ribbon, apron and award certificate. In addition, one random contestant will win a Ghirardelli gift basket.

Entries are judged on chocolate taste (40%), originality/creativity (30%), appearance (20%), and ease of preparation (10%). Ages 18 or older may enter; limit one entry per person.

CSU freshmen can be 4-H Scholars, receive stipend

Douglas County 4-H members, if you will be a CSU freshman this year, you can apply to be a 4-H Scholar and get a stipend. Read on for more information straight from the State 4-H blog.

4-H’ers who are attending CSU as freshmen can apply to be a 4-H Scholar. The Scholars promote the positive experiences they had in 4-H and spend up to 20 hours a month representing 4-H at key activities, speaking at public events, and meeting with stakeholders and donors.

For their efforts, each Scholar receives training, public relations support materials, reimbursement for expenses, and a $1,500 annual stipend toward college expenses. The person selected is eligible to continue to serve as a Scholar throughout their college career – advancing with each grade level – as long as their grades and activity commitments are met. The freshmen applicants must be willing to make a four-year commitment.

To apply, interested persons enrolled at Colorado State University must submit the following to Gary Small, 106 University Square, Fort Collins, CO 80523-4050 by Oct. 1, 2009.

Complete résumé that includes 4-H experiences, years in projects, leadership and speaking experiences and skills, community service activities, work-related experiences, awards and special recognitions.

Two Opportunities: Youth Advisory and Youth Congress

The Douglas County 4-H Office recently received two opportunities that might appeal to older 4-H members interested in the political process. The first is the Colorado Youth Advisory Council. Basically, the purpose of the council is to allow Colorado youth to have a voice in the legislature. The youth meet with senators, debate important topics, create bills, and focus on trying to help or alleviate critical issues facing children and teenagers. For example, this past year, a bill was passed by the Education Committee that focused on having a more environmental curriculum, such as a walk/bike to school day or a science class that focuses more on how to keep the planet healthy.

Some requirements for Colorado Youth Advisory Council (COYAC) include:

*Applicants must be 14-19 years old. They may be attending a Colorado junior high, middle or high school (including on-line school), be home-schooled, participate in a GED program, or have obtained a high school diploma or GED.

*There are 17 different vacancies in senate districts (for specifics on which senate districts are open you can check the website), and it is preferred that applicants be from the open senate districts. However, if an applicant's senate district is already filled, but he/she is still interested, the applicant can request an at-large spot. (Note: At-large spots are much more competitive).

*Only four meetings are held during the year so it is important that applicants be available to come to these meetings.

"Public input on rural land use and lifestyle values is welcome as part of a Douglas County-hosted open house on Wednesday, Aug. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Hearing Room of the Philip S. Miller Building, 100 Third St. in Castle Rock.

Prioritizing rural land use and lifestyle values in the County is a goal of the recently-formed Douglas County Rural Framework Ad Hoc Committee, whose members have been evaluating the County’s rural land use and lifestyle policies and regulations throughout June and July. The open house is designed to report Committee progress to date, as well as provide an opportunity for the public to comment on Committee accomplishments.

“Public input is a valuable part of this process to ensure that the revised Rural Framework meets the needs of the Douglas County community,” said Commissioner Steven A. Boand.
The goal of the Committee is to provide the Board of Douglas County Commissioners with recommendations on possible changes to the Comprehensive Master Plan policies and/or zoning and subdivision resolutions pertaining to rural land use in October 2009.

2009 Douglas County Creative Cooks Contest placings

Douglas County 4-H hosted their annual Creative Cooks Contest on June 2. Participants were encouraged to showcase cooking skills in creative ways while competing with others in similar age categories.

Creative entries included a Japanese theme featuring sushi, a patriotic theme titled "America's Birthday Picnic", and a colorful Fiesta spread showcasing a Red and Green Shrimp Enchilada entrée. Colorful table décor supported meal themes and all participants posted a menu plan for the judge to assess. Contestants earned placings and ribbons based on menu, nutrition knowledge, food safety and other scores.

Here is a snippet from a recent press release: "South Suburban Parks and Recreation's Youth Children's Theater Production Class presents The Lady Bug & Butterfly and Ollie & Stanley, short family plays that impart messages while friendships are forged. Lily is a different looking lady bug who has trouble sharing the meadow with Bob, the arrogant butterfly, while Ollie and Stanley learn about loyalty in a forest fantasy. Here is information you need quoted straight from your fair book:

All 4-H members must turn in a completed e-record and score a minimum of 50% of the total points possible on their e-record book by the published deadline in order to complete the project. Any 4-H’er not in compliance of these rules will not be allowed to compete at the Douglas County Fair. Therefore, they are not a member in good standing in that particular project and cannot participate in the 4-H classes for that project at State Fair.

"On March 31, with a goal to create a more prominent presence on Facebook, National 4-H Council created a 4-H page on Facebook. In four days, the 4-H page fan base increased to more than 5,500 fans. Within a couple of weeks, the membership grew to more than 30,000 4-H fans! With significantly more fans than Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, BGCA, and FFA combined; 4-H is one of the top 130 non-profits on Facebook, based on fan size.

Jess Falkenthal, Educational Technology Specialist at National 4-H Council, was able to secure a meeting with Andrew Bosworth, a Software Design Engineer at Facebook, who just happened to be a California 4-H alumni. He was also invented the News Feed feature in 2006. Through this partnership, the page was able to get a vanity URL, facebook.com/4-h, making it even easier for fans to get to the page.

Through creating discussions, idea and advice sharing, participating in contests and of course posting 4-H memories in photos or videos, 4-H fans will be able to connect with other 4-H fans. In the coming months, National 4-H Council will continue to work with Andrew and Facebook finding better ways to market 4-H on Facebook and making more features available for 4-H fans.

Eureka! All kids ages 5-7 in Douglas County are invited to the 4-H Cloverbud “Mad Scientist” Camp on June 10 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Castle Rock.

We’re cooking up fun in the 4-H Science Laboratory this summer. Youngsters will mix up fizzy concoctions, be science detectives, and take trips through the Fun Dome where anything could happen. All our little Mad Scientists will play science games, make crafts to take home, and keep their energy up with snacks and drinks they make themselves.

“I went to the last two camps and they were both fun. I really liked making crafts, and being able to make my own snacks”, said Jenna age 8. “It was all really fun!”

This annual event is open to children ages 5-7. They do not need to be enrolled in the 4-H Cloverbud Program to participate. Cost is for materials and snacks only: Cloverbuds are $10 and non-Cloverbuds are $15.

The 4-H Cloverbud program is designed to build self-esteem through successful learning experiences. Each lesson addresses one or more youth development concepts: self protection, global awareness, youth connectedness, and career development.

According to a press release, "tours are offered on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month and weekly each Wednesday. Weekend tour arrangements need to be made with a minimum of 48 hours notice. Transportation is provided by the District to and from outlying facilities, but some walking is required.

Miss America Gives Credit to 4-H

Ask Katie Stam about her passion for community service, and she’ll tell you it all started with 4-H. Long before winning her title as Miss America, Katie Stam from Seymour, Ind. would spend hours in 4-H performing in creative dramatics, competing at the Jackson County fair, and visiting with 4-H friends and family. It was there that she learned the values of leadership, mentorship, and community service. And like most 4-H kids, she collected blueribbons and trophies along the way to mark her accomplishments.

In January the Indiana farm girl was crowned Miss America 2009 and now that she’s in the national spotlight, Stam is getting the message out that community service is important and rewarding. Stam’s platform, Promoting Community Service and Involvement, aims to get youth involved in their own neighborhoods.

With community service as her national platform, Stam could potentially transform the way millions of young people think about giving back to their communities and 4-H. “4-H is such an advocate for community service,” says Stam.” It encourages you to reach out to people in so many different ways.”

She is also the National Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network and is the official spokesperson for Zerosmoke.

Stam is currently being considered for Time Magazine’s annual 100 Most Influential People List. The annual list asks the public to rate each candidate on their influence on the world. As part of their ongoing teen contest series at the library in Castle Rock, the Douglas County Library District invites all young film makers ages 12-18 to submit a short film between May 1 and June 16, 2009. Awards will be given for the top three films at a red carpet event on June 30.

This would be one way to do a little promo for the Douglas County 4-H program and win a fun award.

I know some Douglas County 4-H Clubs complete scrapbooks every year and display them at the county fair. I thought I would mention that you can find 4-H themed scrapbooking supplies at the online 4-H Mall! There are several fun items like stamps, kits, stickers, and paper.

Food, fun, and friendship on field trip

The Douglas County 4-H Foundation strikes again! Once more, they funded a field trip to the Johnson and Wales Culinary Institute for a van-ful of 4-H'ers on Monday, April 20. Kids toured classrooms to see culinary students at work, took a look around the campus, and then were treated to a 5-course gourmet meal prepared by student chefs and served in a 5-star restaurant setting. While the standard 5 courses were served - appetizer, salad, soup, entree, dessert - several choices were available, and all got to try something different.

Everybody said they had a good time and would recommend the field trip to other 4-H'ers next year. Watch the newsletter for an announcement around February or so.

Hello! We would like two or three DC 4-H members to become regular blog posters, a minimum of every two weeks and more often if there's something to say. We're looking for all kinds of information! Here's a short list of ideas:

It's true! FCS and general projects are a very active and important part of Douglas County 4-H, and now there's a way to formalize planning and communication about this aspect of 4-H. Your new agent, Michael Lackey, has a great idea. Read on...

"We will hold the first meeting of the Family and Consumer Science/General Project Committee meeting on May 5, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in the extension office meeting room.

These committees will be used to maintain the positive influence that 4-H has on developing youth in Douglas County. The hope is that these committees will guide their program areas in a positive direction and benefit all the youth involved.

We would like positive input from superintendents, leaders, parents and perhaps more importantly 4-H members. The committee will bring positive suggestions and solutions to issues that may be of concern, so ultimately I can make an informed and educated decision. They will also be used to plan activities and clinics to provide leadership opportunities and project training to prepare youth for continued success."

C'mon! I know for a fact there are good ideas and lots of opinions out there on these projects. Now is not the time to be shy!

New safety texting program launched by the Douglas County Sheriff and the DC School District

Hello Douglas County 4-H,

There is an interesting new program being established in our high schools called Text-A-Tip. The purpose is to give students a way to easily contact the school district and the sheriff''s office on matters of school and student safety. In emergencies, 911 is to be used unless it is unsafe to call, and then students may use the Text-A-Tip Program. The program went into effect on April 7th.

Third Annual 4-H Foundation Spring Fun Shoot

Please join the 4-H Foundation at the 3rd Annual 4-H Foundation Spring Fun Shoot!

Who: Open to participants age 8 to adult; you do not need to be a 4-H member to participate.

When: Sunday, April 26, 2009 beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Where: Quail Run Shooting Park, 35027 County Road 27, Elizabeth, CO 80107

Cost: $50 per person - cost includes fun shoot with ten stations with clay targets followed by lunch

What: 100 Round Sporting Clay Shotgun Event

Lewis class scoring system will be used.

The Demonstration/Speech Contest is open to all 4-H members including Cloverbuds. Cake Decorating Contest
Thursday, May 14 at 6:00 p.m. in Kirk Hall
Registration due May 1 to the Extension office

This contest is open to cake decorating project members only. You may enter into the unit you signed up for as a project. Unit 1 members have 30 minutes to decorate their cakes; all other units have 1 hour except for Unit 7, which gets 1.5 hours. Every unit will be broken down into Juniors, Intermediates, and Seniors. Winners in each division will represent Douglas County at the State Cake Decorating Contest. Cloverbuds are also welcome to enter this contest, but are not eligible for the state contest. Registration forms will be online the second week of April. Hard copies available at the office.

The Douglas County 4-H Council needs you!

Have you ever wondered who the poultry superintendent is? Want to know how to pronounce the council president's last name? Would you like to have a verbal explanation of the new COOL requirements?

You can get answers to all these important questions simply by attending the monthly 4-H Council meetings. Leaders and parents share information and network during meetings, and the kids get to attend their own 4-H Youth Council meeting.

What are you waiting for? Come to the April meeting on Monday the 6th at 6:30 p.m. at the Extension office.

EPA News Release (HQ): EPA Launches Video/Photo Project in Celebration of Earth Month

In anticipation of Earth Day, the Environmental Protection Agency today launched an interactive video and photo project asking the public to share the ways they enjoy and protect their environment.

These projects are part of EPA’s multi-event celebration of Earth Month and of EPA’s 39 year history - which will highlight the agency’s renewed commitment to protecting human health and the environment. The EPA is asking filmmakers and photographers around the world to submit their own videos and photos documenting what steps they take to protect the water they drink, the air they breathe and the overall environmental health of their communities. Participants can submit their video entries to the EPA’s Earth Day Video Project group on YouTube. Photo entries should be submitted via Flickr.

Reducing your carbon footprint
Conserving and protecting water
Protecting the environment
Reduce, reuse, recycle

EPA officials will select videos and photos to feature on the website throughout April. The agency will accept videos and photos from today through the end of April. This release is the first of several to announce EPA’s planned Earth Month activities.

This would be a great project for 4-H members enrolled in photography. In addition to this opportunity, photography project members should also explore the possibility of entering the lightning photography activity. We found another wonderful program offered through the Douglas County Library District. Here's your chance to learn about different places in the world.

"The World Travel Series returns to Parker Library (10851 South Crossroads Drive) this April. Every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. from April 1-22 features a new adventure.

April 1 - Alaska Adventure
This lively and humorous presentation is suitable for all ages and features photos of the last frontier, artifacts, and a discussion. Naomi Gaede-Penner is the author of the non-fiction "Prescription for Adventure" book series, which tell stories of her parents and her family. Her books "Prescription for Finding Home in Alaska" and "Prescription for Adventure: Bush Pilot Doctor" will be available for purchase.

April 8 - Peace Corps Experience in Samoa
Valerie Hopkins will share her experiences living in Samoa as a Peace Corps volunteer. She'll also provide tips to travelers who may want to see Samoa's beautiful beaches, its distinctive artwork, or Robert Louis Stevenson's home.

April 15 - A New Look at Vietnam
If the thought of Vietnam conjures images of "Apocalypse Now"- you don't know the Vietnam of today! Rochelle Logan and Andrea Wyant will share stories about their recent adventure in Vietnam - its friendly people, untouched beaches, fresh seafood, and bustling markets.

April 22 - Amazon Rain Forest
Journey to a world of exotic beauty deep in the heart of Brazil. Jose Goncalves will share his experiences in the native villages on the banks of the Amazon River. See their homes, families, children, and artwork. You'll also see villages in the areas of the rainforest that have been deforested and see its impact on the people living there.

4-H members, here's an interesting program: The Making of Cloth and Culture

We found a program that may be of interest to our 4-H members who work with cloth. Quoting straight from a press release from the Douglas County Library District:

"A program at Highlands Ranch Library (9292 Ridgeline Boulevard) takes a serious and fascinating look at "Tools of the Trade: The Making of Cloth and Culture" on Saturday, March 28 at 1 p.m. This hands-on class will demonstrate the production of cloth, how both antique and modern tools are used, and how our culture and language has been influenced by cloth production.

Fiber artist and librarian Gage Evans will present the program. Evans teaches a variety of classes from felt-making to doll-making to fiber arts history. She's been weaving for twenty years and has studied fiber arts through her associations nationwide."

4-H knitters, enter a local contest at the Castle Rock library

We know we have some knitters out there in Douglas County 4-H. Show off your skills at the latest contest in Castle Rock at the Philip S. Miller Library (100 S. Wilcox).

"April 1 through May 30, teens can register and submit any piece of knitted work. From June 2-30, the knitted art will be displayed in the Aloha Teen Tower at the library and patrons can vote for their favorite piece. Ribbons for the top three winners will be awarded on Wednesday, July 1.

Stop by the Aloha Teen Tower at Philip S. Miller Library in Castle Rock to pick up a copy of the rules and register."
